Why Store-Bought Oven Cleaner Isn't Worth the Risk

Oven cleaning is one of those chores that tends to get put off until it's embarrassing enough that you finally do something about it. When people finally do, the most common next move is a trip to the store for a can of name-brand oven cleaner — and that's usually where the real problem starts.

Are “fume-free” oven cleaners actually fume-free?

Not really. Read the fine print on most “fume-free” formulas and you'll often still find a warning like: “Vapor harmful… open windows and doors or use other means to ensure fresh air entry during application and drying.” Some also disclose an ingredient known to the state of California to cause cancer under Prop 65. “Fume-free” on the label doesn't always mean fume-free in practice.

What's actually in the can?

Most name-brand oven cleaners are formulated to be strong enough to strip baked-on grease and carbon off metal, and the warning labels reflect that. It's common to see language like: “DANGER: CORROSIVE… WILL BURN EYES AND SKIN. HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, mucous membranes and clothing. Use only with adequate ventilation. Avoid breathing spray mist. Wear long rubber gloves when using.” That's not a product we'd want sitting in the same appliance we cook food in — gloves, ventilation and all.

Why shouldn't oven cleaner touch a grill?

We've seen this go wrong firsthand: a customer used oven cleaner on a stainless steel grill, let it sit, and it left permanent white staining across the surface that no amount of work could fully remove without risking scratches (read the full story here). Even when the can claims it's safe for stainless steel, oven cleaner is formulated to eat through grease — it doesn't know the difference between the grease and your grill's finish.

What do you use instead?

Our PrestigePurity™ process relies on heat, a proprietary steam-bath soak, and hand scrubbing — not harsh chemicals. Products are matched to the specific materials of your grill or oven rather than reaching for the strongest thing on the shelf. Once cleaning is done, everything is thoroughly rinsed, so there's no chemical smell, no fumes, and nothing you need to “burn off” before you use the appliance again.

Skip the harsh chemicals

Let us handle it properly — no oven cleaner anywhere near your grill or oven.
